Tragus Piercing
Not like the earlobe, the tragus is very thick and therefore it involves a little bit of extra pressure on the part of the piercing practitioner. A word to the wise, you should always have a specialist perform a tragus piercing, as it is quite difficult and cannot be done by oneself (although many try).
First, the piercing practitioner will take a pair of forcepts and grab the anti-helix portion of the ear. The anti-tragus is the little flap of cartilage that it right in front of the ear canal.
Using either a straight or a curved, hollow piercing needle, the practitioner will select the position of the tragus piercing and press the needle through the cartilage. This is done from the exterior part of the anti-tragus towards the ear canal.
Once the practitioner has pressed the needle through the cartilage, he or she will place the post of a piece of tragus jewelry into the hollowed out needle. From then, he or she will slide the piercing needle completely through the newly created hole, leaving the tragus jewelry inserted in the hole. A screw back will be applied to the tragus jewelry to be sure that it will not fall out.
A tragus piercing is painful for some people, but many do not have any discomfort at all. Generally, it takes between 4 months to 6 months for the piercing to completely heal. During this time, it is advised to clean the piercing with rubbing alcohol or apply an antibiotic cream to make sure that there is no infection.
After the tragus piercing is completely healed, the original tragus jewelry can be replaced at will. Some people find it difficult to change out their jewelry since it is in sort of an odd place. Using a friend can make this process much easier.
There are many different forms of tragus jewelry that you can place in your ear. Some people like straight posts with a diamond or other gemstone, while others prefer to have a hoop or curved barbell. There are different colors, metals, with or without gemstones. It is really up to a persons personality and trend as to which kind of earring they prefer.
